Drones have been in use since 1783, and over the last 239 years there has been significant innovation moving drones from target practice to advanced reconnaissance and tactical units. The latest developments allow for precision guided attack drones, swarm droning & target recognition, which allows for more effective urban warfare.
This importance has been battle tested and proved its importance in the American gulf war, Israel's GAZA war and the Azerbaijan & Armenian conflict.
This has caused the defence industry to shift expenditure, with experts predicting global UAV/UAS expenditure to exceed $186 Billion with UAV making up $96billion. This is above the 20,000 UAV already in active use.
A bulk of this expenditure will come from global superpowers such as the US, Europe, China & Russia, with internally developed programs and companies. Although Africa presents a unique opportunity, it have yet to develop sufficient domestic industry with the exception of South Africa, Although the African continent still contributes $42 billion to annual defence expenditure.
Total SADC members defence expenditure is $7.7 Billion, with a bulk of the expenditure coming from South Africa.
East African expenditure is approximately $4.3 Billion with Kenya and Ethiopia being the biggest consumers within the region
The West African region has a budget of $5.6 Billion per annum for defence.
The largest contributor to the African Defence expenditure is North Africa, $24 billion towards there defence industry.
